The SMS Kaiser is one of the most historically significant shipwrecks in Scapa Flow, the vast natural harbour enclosed by the Orkney Islands off the northern coast of Scotland. It is the remains of a German Imperial Navy battleship that was scuttled as part of one of the most extraordinary acts of mass naval self-destruction in history. The wreck lies in the sheltered waters of Scapa Flow and today serves as a world-renowned dive site, attracting thousands of recreational and technical divers from across the globe each year. Its underwater presence is a haunting memorial to the end of the First World War and the pride, defiance and tragedy of the defeated German High Seas Fleet.

The SMS Kaiser was a König-class battleship of the Imperial German Navy, launched in 1911 and completed in 1913. She displaced approximately 25,000 tons and measured around 175 metres in length. During the First World War she participated in the Battle of Jutland in May 1916, the largest naval battle of that conflict, where she sustained damage but survived. Following Germany's defeat and the armistice in November 1918, the interned German fleet — 74 warships in total — was held under guard at Scapa Flow while the terms of the peace treaty were negotiated. On 21 June 1919, Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter, fearing the ships would be seized by the British, gave the secret order to scuttle the entire fleet. Within hours, the SMS Kaiser and dozens of other vessels slipped beneath the cold waters of the flow in one of the most astonishing naval events in history. It remains the largest scuttling of a fleet ever recorded.

Most of the scuttled ships were subsequently salvaged between the 1920s and 1930s by the salvage company Cox & Danks, which raised them using a combination of compressed air and extraordinary engineering ingenuity. However, the SMS Kaiser was among the vessels that proved too difficult or too costly to fully recover and remained on the seabed. She now rests upside down at a depth ranging from approximately 18 to 40 metres, making her accessible to advanced recreational divers as well as technical divers. The sheer scale of the wreck underwater is difficult to convey in words — the hull plates, propeller shafts, gun turrets, and other structural elements of this once-fearsome warship create a labyrinthine and otherworldly underwater landscape.

Diving the SMS Kaiser is considered an exceptional experience even by the standards of Scapa Flow's remarkable wrecks. Because she lies inverted, divers explore what was once the upper structure of the ship but now faces the seabed, while the keel looms above. The encrusting marine life — sea anemones, soft corals, plumose anemones, edible crabs, and shoals of fish — has transformed the steel hull into an artificial reef of considerable biological richness. Visibility in Scapa Flow is often quite good by UK standards, sometimes exceeding 10 to 15 metres, though it varies with the season and tidal conditions. The sounds underwater are those of bubbles, the faint creak and groan of the structure in the current, and the movement of marine life across encrusted metal surfaces.

Scapa Flow itself is one of the most storied stretches of water in the British Isles. Enclosed by the Orkney Mainland to the north, and the islands of Hoy, Flotta, and South Ronaldsay to the south and west, it covers an area of roughly 324 square kilometres and was used as a major British naval base in both world wars. The landscape above water is quintessentially Orcadian — low-lying, windswept moorland and agricultural land stretching to dramatic cliff edges, with wide skies and the ever-present sense of the sea. The Churchill Barriers, causeways connecting several of the islands, were constructed during the Second World War and today carry the main road between South Ronaldsay and the Orkney Mainland. The Old Man of Hoy, one of the most famous sea stacks in the British Isles, is visible in the distance across the flow. The nearby town of Stromness is the principal gateway for dive operations.

Visiting the SMS Kaiser is almost exclusively done by boat-based diving. Stromness, a picturesque harbour town on the west coast of the Orkney Mainland, is the main hub for dive charters operating throughout Scapa Flow. Numerous dive operators are based there and offer guided wreck dives to the Kaiser and the other surviving German wrecks. The dive is generally recommended for divers with advanced open water certification at a minimum, and given the depth and the penetration possibilities, experience with wreck diving is strongly advised. The best diving conditions are typically found between late spring and early autumn, when water temperatures are marginally warmer and daylight hours are long — Orkney experiences very extended summer days given its northerly latitude. The water temperature even in summer rarely rises above around 12°C, so a drysuit is standard equipment for most visiting divers.

Orkney offers an enormous range of attractions beyond the dive sites. The islands are home to a remarkable concentration of Neolithic monuments, including the Ring of Brodgar, the Standing Stones of Stenness, Skara Brae, and Maeshowe — a complex of sites recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Italian Chapel on the Churchill Barriers, built by Italian prisoners of war using two Nissen huts and whatever materials they could find, is a deeply moving place. The Stromness Museum and the Orkney Museum in Kirkwall both hold significant collections relating to the German fleet scuttling and the wartime history of the flow. For those with an interest in military history, the flow is practically unrivalled in Europe as an open-air museum of naval history, with the wrecks serving as time capsules from the early twentieth century preserved beneath the cold northern water.

A fascinating and little-known detail about the SMS Kaiser and her sister wrecks concerns the ongoing scientific interest in the steel from which they were constructed. Pre-war steel, forged before atmospheric nuclear testing began in 1945, contains extremely low levels of background radiation compared to modern steel. This makes the metal from the Scapa Flow wrecks genuinely valuable for use in sensitive scientific instruments such as Geiger counters and radiation detectors, where background radiation in modern materials would interfere with precision measurements. Samples of the wreck metal have reportedly been used in scientific and medical research contexts. The SMS Kaiser, sitting in the waters of Scapa Flow over a century after she was scuttled, thus continues to contribute to human endeavour in ways her builders could never have imagined.
