Eltham Palace was originally built as a moated medieval manor in the 1300s, with the famous Great Hall added by Edward IV in the 1470s. It served as a major royal residence before being transformed into an Art Deco mansion by Stephen and Virginia Courtauld in 1936, who built their modern home around the surviving medieval hall.
