Ouse Washes
The Ouse Washes is one of the most significant and extraordinary wetland landscapes in Britain, a vast floodplain stretching roughly 35 kilometres between the towns of Earith in Cambridgeshire and Denver in Norfolk. Sitting at the heart of the Fenland region, this remarkable place functions as a deliberate flood storage reservoir — an engineered wetland created to protect the surrounding agricultural land of the Fens from inundation during periods of heavy rainfall and high water. Yet despite its origins as a practical hydraulic engineering solution, it has become one of the most important wildlife habitats in northern Europe, particularly celebrated for its extraordinary concentrations of wintering wildfowl and wading birds. It is jointly managed as a nature reserve by the RSPB, the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT), and the Cambridge Wildlife Trust, making it one of the most comprehensively protected wetland systems in the UK.
The history of the Ouse Washes is inseparable from the dramatic transformation of the Fenland landscape in the seventeenth century. The great Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden was commissioned by the Earl of Bedford and a consortium of investors known as the Adventurers to drain the Fens and convert them to productive agricultural land. Between 1630 and 1651, Vermuyden oversaw the construction of two great parallel channels — the Old Bedford River and the New Bedford River, also called the Hundred Foot Drain — running in near-straight lines across the landscape. The strip of land between these two channels, roughly a mile wide, was deliberately left as an unbanked washland. During winter floods, water overtops the inner banks and fills the Washes, relieving pressure on the surrounding drainage system. This ingenious design, now nearly four centuries old, created the wetland that exists today almost as an accidental byproduct of land reclamation.
In person, the Ouse Washes has a quality unlike almost anywhere else in England. The landscape is relentlessly flat and open, the sky enormous and pressing down on a seemingly infinite plain of grass, sedge, water and willow. In winter, when the Washes flood, the whole basin can become a continuous sheet of water reflecting pale grey skies, broken only by the dark lines of the river banks and the silhouettes of thousands upon thousands of birds. The sound in winter is extraordinary — the bugling and whooping of Bewick's and whooper swans, the gabbling masses of wigeon and teal, the haunting calls of golden plover rising in great wheeling flocks. In summer, the mood shifts entirely: the water recedes to reveal wet meadows dotted with wildflowers, and the air fills with the churring of sedge warblers, the booming of bitterns, and the bubbling songs of curlew and lapwing.
The wildlife value of the Ouse Washes cannot be overstated. In winter it regularly holds internationally important numbers of wildfowl, with tens of thousands of ducks — principally wigeon, teal, shoveler, pintail, and pochard — alongside large herds of Bewick's swans migrating from their Siberian breeding grounds and whooper swans from Iceland. It is one of the most reliable sites in Britain to see these smaller tundra swans. The WWT Welney Wetland Centre, located a short distance from the coordinates given, operates floodlit evening swan feeds during winter that attract these swans in their hundreds to feed directly in front of heated observatory windows — an almost incomprehensible spectacle of wildlife at close quarters. In summer, the Washes support breeding populations of black-tailed godwit, ruff, and garganey, species that have all but disappeared from much of lowland England.
The surrounding landscape is quintessential Fenland — a largely treeless agricultural plain crisscrossed by drainage dykes, with the long straight lines of the Bedford Rivers forming the most prominent physical features. The nearby village of Welney, on the Norfolk side of the Washes, is a quiet, scattered settlement that serves as the main gateway to the WWT reserve. The area around Denver to the north includes Denver Sluice, a remarkable complex of flood control structures that has controlled the tidal reach of the Great Ouse since the seventeenth century and remains a working piece of hydraulic infrastructure of considerable historic interest. To the south, Earith marks the other end of the Washes system and is the point where Vermuyden's cuts diverge from the natural course of the River Great Ouse. The cathedral city of Ely, with its stunning medieval cathedral visible from many parts of the Fens on clear days, lies roughly 12 kilometres to the southwest.
Visiting the Ouse Washes requires some planning, as the area is rural and spread out over a considerable distance. The WWT Welney Wetland Centre is the most accessible and rewarding entry point, with hides, observatories, boardwalks, and the famous winter swan feeds. The RSPB manages the southern section of the Washes from its Welches Dam reserve near Manea, which offers free access to a network of hides along the Old Bedford River bank. Getting there by public transport is challenging — the nearest railway stations are at Ely and March, from which the Washes are only accessible by taxi or bicycle. By car, the B1098 road running along the west bank and the A1101 on the eastern side provide access. Winter, from November through February, is the season of peak spectacle, when flooding is most likely and wildfowl numbers are at their height. Summer visits reward those interested in breeding waders and botanical interest, with the meadows supporting rare fenland plant communities. Wellingtons or waterproof boots are strongly advised at almost any time of year.
One of the more haunting and little-known aspects of the Ouse Washes is its occasional role as a reminder of the precariousness of Fenland life. The entire region sits at or below sea level, and the continued existence of the agricultural Fens depends entirely on continuous pumping and maintained drainage infrastructure. In years of extreme flood, the Washes overflow beyond their intended capacity, and the surrounding farmland — some of the most productive arable land in Britain — faces serious inundation. Climate change is making these events more frequent and more severe, and there are ongoing and sometimes contentious debates about the future management of the system, with conservationists, farmers, and flood engineers holding very different visions for what the Fens should look like in the coming century. The Ouse Washes sits at the centre of this debate, a place where seventeenth-century engineering, twentieth-century nature conservation, and twenty-first-century climate anxiety all converge on the same extraordinary, quietly dramatic landscape.
