SMS Kronprinz
The SMS Kronprinz is one of the most historically significant shipwrecks in the world, lying on the seabed of Scapa Flow in Orkney, Scotland. It is a German Imperial Navy battleship — a König-class dreadnought — that was deliberately scuttled on 21 June 1919 as part of the mass scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet, one of the most extraordinary acts of self-destruction in naval history. The Kronprinz Wilhelm, as it was originally named (later renamed Kronprinz to avoid confusion with a German ocean liner), displaces around 25,000 tonnes and remains one of the largest surviving wrecks of the scuttled fleet. It is now a prized dive site, attracting wreck divers from across the world who come to explore its massive hull, gun turrets, and encrusted superstructure in one of Europe's most celebrated dive locations.
The story of the SMS Kronprinz is inseparable from the fate of the entire German High Seas Fleet at the end of the First World War. Following the Armistice of November 1918, the German fleet — comprising 74 warships — was interned at Scapa Flow under the terms of the Armistice agreement, awaiting the outcome of the Paris Peace Conference. The fleet's commander, Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter, fearing the ships would be seized by the Allied powers and distributed among the victorious navies, gave a secret order to scuttle the fleet on Midsummer's Day 1919. In a matter of hours, nearly 52 of the 74 ships sank beneath the cold Orcadian waters. The Kronprinz was among those that went fully to the bottom, settling on the seabed where it remains today as a war grave and marine heritage site.
The wreck lies in the eastern part of Scapa Flow, resting on its side at a depth of around 35 to 40 metres, making it accessible to experienced recreational divers with appropriate qualifications. The sheer scale of the vessel is the first thing that strikes divers upon descent — it is a vast, dark mountain of steel materialising out of the gloom, encrusted with decades of marine growth including anemones, soft corals, and a dense covering of hydroids. Massive gun turrets loom at angles, their barrels partly buried in silt. Schools of fish drift through the rusting superstructure, and the entire wreck has become an artificial reef of extraordinary richness.
Scapa Flow itself is a naturally sheltered body of water almost entirely enclosed by the Orkney islands, with the main surrounding landmasses being the Orkney Mainland to the north, Hoy to the west, and South Ronaldsay to the southeast. The landscape above the waterline is quintessentially Orcadian — treeless, wind-scoured moorland and green farmland under enormous, ever-changing skies. The nearby town of Stromness on the Mainland is the main hub for diving operations, with several specialist dive charter companies operating daily trips out to the wrecks of Scapa Flow. The Churchill Barriers, built during the Second World War to block the eastern approaches to the Flow, also connect several islands and carry the road south toward the Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, another remarkable nearby heritage site.
Diving the SMS Kronprinz is an experience that requires advance planning. Visitors must book through one of the accredited dive charter operators based in Stromness or around Scapa Flow, as independent dive access is not straightforward given the distances involved and the need for surface cover. The wreck is recommended for divers with Advanced Open Water certification at minimum, and many operators recommend wreck diving experience or technical dive training given the depths involved. Visibility in Scapa Flow is often excellent by UK standards, frequently reaching 10 to 20 metres, and the water is cold year-round, requiring drysuits for most divers. Summer months from May to September offer the best weather windows and longest daylight hours, with the Orkney summer light being remarkable in its intensity and duration.
One of the more poignant and unusual facts about the Kronprinz and the other Scapa Flow wrecks is their significance in nuclear physics history. The steel used in the construction of these pre-First World War warships was smelted before the era of atmospheric nuclear testing and therefore has an extraordinarily low background radiation level compared to modern steel. As a result, this so-called "low-background steel" has been salvaged from the Scapa Flow wrecks and used in extremely sensitive scientific instruments, including radiation detectors for medical and physics research, where even the trace radioactivity present in all modern steel would interfere with measurements. The wrecks are thus not merely historical monuments but have contributed materially to modern science, giving the rusting hulks of the High Seas Fleet an afterlife their original builders could never have imagined.
