SMS Prinzregent Luitpold is one of the most remarkable underwater heritage sites in the British Isles — a scuttled German Imperial Navy battleship resting on the bed of Scapa Flow in Orkney, Scotland. The vessel is a Bayern-class dreadnought battleship that forms part of the famous interned German High Seas Fleet, deliberately sunk on 21 June 1919 in one of the most extraordinary acts of naval sabotage in history. Today the wreck lies at these coordinates in the sheltered waters of Scapa Flow, drawing divers from across the world who come to witness what remains of one of the most powerful naval forces ever assembled. The site is protected under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986, giving it legal status as a war grave and controlled diving site.

The story of SMS Prinzregent Luitpold begins in the shipyards of the German Empire, where she was laid down at the Germaniawerft in Kiel and launched in 1912, commissioned in 1913. Named after the Prince Regent of Bavaria, Luitpold, she was a König-class dreadnought battleship displacing over 25,000 tons and armed with ten 30.5 cm guns. She participated in the Battle of Jutland in 1916, the largest naval engagement of the First World War, where the German and British fleets clashed in the North Sea with colossal losses on both sides. Prinzregent Luitpold sustained no significant damage at Jutland but spent much of the remainder of the war confined to harbour, her crew growing restless and radicalized as the war turned against Germany.

Following Germany's armistice in November 1918, the bulk of the High Seas Fleet — 74 warships in total — was interned at Scapa Flow under the terms of the ceasefire while peace negotiations dragged on in Paris. The fleet sat at anchor for months under a skeleton German crew commanded by Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter, with British warships keeping a watchful eye. On 21 June 1919, believing that the Armistice was about to expire and that the British intended to seize the fleet, von Reuter issued the order to scuttle. Crews opened sea cocks, smashed pipes, and flooded their vessels in a coordinated act of defiance. Fifty-two of the seventy-four ships went to the bottom of Scapa Flow, including Prinzregent Luitpold, in what remains the largest deliberate sinking of warships in history. British forces attempted to stop the scuttling, and in the confusion nine German sailors were shot and killed — the last combat deaths of the First World War.

Most of the fleet was salvaged between the 1920s and 1930s by the Metal Industries salvage firm, with workers raising the enormous hulls using compressed air and chains in operations that were engineering feats of their era. Prinzregent Luitpold, however, was only partially salvaged — her superstructure was largely stripped, but the main hull was deemed too difficult or uneconomical to raise entirely and was left in situ. She now lies inverted at a depth of around 36 metres, which places much of the wreck within recreational diving range, though the deeper sections and interior spaces require technical diving qualifications. The sheer scale of the vessel — over 174 metres in length — means that a single dive can only ever reveal a fraction of what rests below.

Diving on Prinzregent Luitpold is an experience of awesome scale and haunting atmosphere. The hull looms out of the murk like a submerged cliff face, encrusted with decades of marine growth — anemones, sponges, and soft corals bloom across the steel plating in vivid oranges, pinks, and whites. Visibility in Scapa Flow varies considerably with season and tidal state but can reach 15 metres or more on a good day, allowing divers to take in sweeping views of the upturned hull, the enormous gun turrets now pointing uselessly into the seabed, and the vast propellers still in place at the stern. Conger eels and large wrasse inhabit the darker recesses, and seals are occasionally encountered, curious and playful. The silence of the deep is broken only by the sound of one's own breathing and the distant hum of dive boats above.

Scapa Flow itself is a natural harbour of extraordinary character, enclosed by the Orkney Mainland to the north, and the islands of Hoy, South Ronaldsay, and Burray to the south and east. The landscape above the water is quintessentially Orcadian — low, treeless moorland and farmland sweeping down to shores of red sandstone and dark shingle, with skies that change with startling rapidity from brilliant sunshine to bruised Atlantic storm. The Churchill Barriers, built during the Second World War to close off the eastern approaches after the sinking of HMS Royal Oak by a German U-boat in 1939, now carry the road connecting several of the southern islands, and the rusting hulks of concrete blockships used in their construction can still be seen jutting from the shallows. The Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, created by Italian prisoners of war from two Nissen huts, is another haunting reminder of the area's layered wartime history.

Visiting the wreck requires booking with one of the many experienced dive charter operators based in and around Stromness and St. Margaret's Hope in Orkney. Scapa Flow diving is genuinely world-class and justifiably famous — dive magazines consistently rank it among the top wreck diving destinations on the planet. The main dive season runs from April through September, when longer days and calmer weather make conditions most favourable. Water temperatures even in summer rarely rise above 12°C, so a drysuit is strongly recommended. Non-divers with an interest in the scuttled fleet can visit the excellent Scapa Flow Visitor Centre and Museum at Lyness on the island of Hoy, which houses artefacts, photographs, and exhibits telling the story of the flow's wartime significance in absorbing detail.

A detail that continues to fascinate historians and scientists alike is that the steel from the Scapa Flow wrecks, including Prinzregent Luitpold, is considered "low-background steel" — metal smelted before the era of atmospheric nuclear testing, meaning it lacks the trace radioactive contamination found in all steel produced after 1945. This makes it extraordinarily valuable for use in sensitive radiation-detection equipment such as Geiger counters and medical devices, and small quantities of the metal have indeed been salvaged for exactly this purpose over the decades. The idea that a century-old battleship resting in a Scottish sea loch might contribute to modern medical physics adds a quietly astonishing dimension to an already remarkable story.
