Llygod Old Castle

Castle • Vale of Glamorgan

Llygod Old Castle is a very faint medieval fortified site located in farmland between Llanblethian and Welsh St Donats. The monument survives only as low earthworks and shallow ground undulations, but its long standing place-name tradition confirms that a small medieval castle or fortified manor once stood here. The structure was almost certainly a timber built strongpoint, typical of the minor Norman estates that were established across the central Vale during the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. The visible remains consist of a slight raised platform with subtle embanked edges that form the outline of a small ringwork or motte with a surrounding enclosure. No ditch is visible at ground level today, although early mapping and aerial photographs indicate that an embanked circuit once defined the site more clearly. The castle was never rebuilt in stone, which explains the absence of masonry fragments and the rapid erosion of the earthworks through ploughing and agricultural improvement. The location fits the pattern of small manorial centres in the Vale of Glamorgan. These places were positioned to oversee farmland and tenants rather than to command dramatic defensive ground. Llygod Old Castle would have acted as a local residence for a minor lord or steward, and its defensive role would have been limited to simple timber palisades around a hall, kitchen structures and a small yard. The site had probably fallen out of use by the late medieval or Tudor period, when more comfortable manor houses replaced small timber castles across the Vale. Although little can be seen on the surface today, the monument’s significance lies in the buried archaeology beneath the turf. Subsurface features are likely to include the postholes of timber buildings, palisade trenches and occupation layers that can reveal how this small manorial centre operated. For this reason the site is legally protected as a scheduled monument. Alternate names: Llygod Old Castle, Old Castle Llygod, Castell Llygod
