Broom Bridge, also known as Broombridge or Broome Bridge, is a modest canal crossing in Cabra, on the northwestern edge of Dublin city, that punches far above its weight in terms of historical and intellectual significance. It is one of the most celebrated sites in the history of mathematics, for it was here, on 16 October 1843, that the Irish mathematician Sir William Rowan Hamilton experienced a sudden flash of inspiration and carved the fundamental formula for quaternions into the stone of the bridge. This single moment is considered one of the great eureka episodes in the history of science, making a humble bridge over the Royal Canal into a place of pilgrimage for mathematicians and physicists from all over the world.

Hamilton had been wrestling for years with the problem of extending complex numbers into three dimensions. On that October morning, he was walking along the towpath of the Royal Canal from his home at Dunsink Observatory into the city centre with his wife, when the solution came to him complete and whole: a four-dimensional number system requiring a fourth axis. So urgent was his need to record the formula before it slipped away that he took out a penknife and scratched the equation i² = j² = k² = ijk = −1 into the limestone of the bridge. The original carving has long since worn away, but the story has lost none of its power. A plaque commemorating the inscription was placed on the bridge, and every year on 16 October, mathematicians and enthusiasts gather here for the Hamilton Walk, retracing the route from Dunsink Observatory to Broom Bridge in homage to that electric moment of discovery.

Quaternions turned out to be enormously consequential. They were initially controversial and competed with the vector calculus methods that eventually became standard in physics, but they found renewed importance in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Today they are used extensively in computer graphics, robotics, aerospace engineering, and the mathematics underlying video game engines and spacecraft attitude control. The bridge in Cabra is therefore not merely a curiosity but a site directly connected to technologies that permeate modern life, which gives it an unexpected resonance for visitors with an interest in computing and engineering as much as pure mathematics.

The bridge itself is a small, plain structure carrying Broombridge Road over the Royal Canal. It is built of limestone and brick in the understated manner typical of early nineteenth-century Irish canal infrastructure, with low parapets and a simple arch over the water. It is not a grand or imposing edifice, and that modesty is in many ways part of its charm. The canal at this point is wide and relatively tranquil, bordered by towpaths with trees that trail their branches toward the water. Depending on the season, the scene can be quietly beautiful, the still water reflecting the sky and the stonework of the bridge, with ducks and coots moving unhurriedly beneath the arch.

The surrounding neighbourhood of Cabra is a working-class residential area with a strong community identity. Nearby is Broombridge railway station, a stop on the Dublin commuter rail network and the Luas Cross City tram line, which makes the site extremely accessible from the city centre. The Royal Canal Greenway, a long-distance walking and cycling route that follows the canal from Dublin to the River Shannon in County Longford, passes directly by the bridge, so many cyclists and walkers encounter it as part of a longer journey. The area also has connections to the writer Brendan Behan, who grew up in nearby Cabra.

Visiting is straightforward and free. The bridge is accessible at any time, as it sits on a public road and alongside the public canal towpath. The commemorative plaque is easy to find on the bridge parapet facing the canal. Public transport connections are excellent: Broombridge station is served by the DART and commuter rail lines as well as the Luas Red Line tram, placing it within minutes of Dublin city centre. The Hamilton Walk on 16 October each year is the most atmospheric time to visit, when the anniversary draws academics, students, and enthusiasts who walk the roughly eight-kilometre route from Dunsink Observatory, often carrying lighted lanterns in the evening. At any other time of year the site is quiet, sometimes barely noticed by passersby, which gives it a pleasantly contemplative quality.

One of the more endearing details of the site is that the mathematical community has made a gentle tradition of visiting and leaving behind small tributes — equations written on slips of paper, photos taken with the plaque, and impromptu discussions on the towpath. Mathematicians from as far as Japan and the United States have made the trip specifically to stand on the bridge and touch the stone where Hamilton carved his formula. There is something quietly moving about a place of such modest physical character holding such a weighty role in the history of human thought. The bridge asks nothing of its visitors in terms of spectacle, and in return it offers a rare and genuine connection to the moment a single mind changed the course of mathematics.
